Smartarray E200 Interim Recovery

$

0

HI All,

I removed a faulty HDD from an ML110 Server with a SmartArray E200 Controller (expansion card NOT the E200i) set in a RAID1. I have now plugged two new HDD drives (both larger than the previous drive) into the drive bay (one hot-plug the other cold).  Unfortunately, no matter what I try they both come up with Interim Recovery in the ACU.

Now the new drive says it is bad or missing?

Any help out there?

Cheers

P2000 MSA - new disk not found

Hello.

Complete newbie here. On our P2000 G3 SAS, one of the five RAID6 vdisks failed. We ordered a replacement.  For what it's worth, the associate confirmed via chat that the drive is compatible.

I've inserted the new drive into slot 21, but it's not found. I tried slots 22, 23, and 24, but no luck.

On the actual drive, the Fault LED (on right) is solid amber and the Activity LED is alternating between amber and green at a regular rate.

Please let me know what other info is needed to troubleshoot this.

Thank you!

HP ProLiant MicroServer with embedded AMD SATA Controller

$

Hello everyone.

We have a HP ProLiant MicroServer (PID: 664447-425) configured with a RAID 10 (1+0) Array (4 disks). It has the CentOS installed and we've been experiencing frequent freezes and a slow performance lately. When we checked the CentOS log files, we discovered the following:

ata2.00: status: { DRDY ERR }

ata2.00: error: { UNC }

ata2.00: failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED

We searched the Internet about these errors and most of the information we found indicated a faulty Hard Drive. However, neither the SMART Status in BIOS nor the RAID 10 Utility is indicating a fault. BIOS says 'SMART Status OK' and the RAID 10 Utility displays the Array as 'Functional'.

To be on the safe side, we replaced the Hard Drive (Non-hotplug) but when we went in the RAID 10 Utility, this Hard Drive was not added automatically to the Array. In fact, the Array changed from 'Functional' to 'Critical' and it was indicating that one of the drives in the Array is missing. The new Hard Drive was listed as a 'Single Drive' and we didn't manage to find a way to add the new Hard Drive to the current Array.

As a result of the above, we would appreciate answers to these questions:

1. Do you think that the error messages provided by CentOS indicate a faulty Hard Drive? Remember that both the BIOS and the RAID Utility are saying that all Hard Drives are healthy.

2. How do you add a new Hard Drive to the Array in the AMD RAID Utility provided with this HP MicroServer? We couldn't find a way to do it. When we went into option 2 (LD View / LD Define Menu) and pressed Ctrl+C (Define LD), it listed the new Hard Drive but it could only be configured as a new Array. There wasn't an option to add it to the current Array.

Your assistance would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

MSA 2040 Backup Options

$

I'm curious how folks are backing up the data stored on an MSA 2040 systems?  Our setup is pretty small and simple... 3 LUNS dedicated to VMware Datastores... and 1 LUN dedicated as a builds repository.

I'm looking for a product/products that would allow me to utilize the snapshoting capabilities of the MSA, and then backup that snapshoted data off of the MSA.

In regards to VMware, ideally some backup software would trigger a VM snapshot, and then take a MSA snapshot of the LUN, back it up and then delete the VM and MSA snapshots.

Similar to VMware, ideally the builds repository LUN would utilize a MSA snapshot, back it up and then delete the MSA snapshot.

I've used products like CommVault and TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) to accomplish this againsts a NetApp SAN/NAS before however I'm finding very little information on any products that support the MSA series.  I was wondering if anyone had a working solution or thoughts on how I might achieve this?

Cheers,

Ken

HP EVA4400 no replications

$

Hi All,

On the PRimary side is EVA P6300, in working order.
On the DR side is EVA4400. On this storage are replicated Vdisks from the EVA P6300.

EVA4400 has two controllers HSV300, Firmware: 11300000
Command View EVA: 10.3

After Power down of EVA4400(using Command View) and switching on, contoller 1 does not turn on.
On the controller 1 all LEDs are off. From the Command View, controller 1 completly missing.
Controller 2 is working. VMware could start VM on that storage. Obviously over ethernet.
That is hardware issue. Who knows what went wrong. Suggestions?

But, the problem is that the replications stopped working.
Error "Logging/Not merging" is on all DR groups on the source side.
I could not start replication when I manually changed parameter "Replication I/O"
from "Suspended" to "Resumed", on the source side.
I created new disk and tried to replicate it and I got the message:
"The local storage system has no available path to the remote storage system".

What should I do to start replications on the storage where working only second controller?

Best regards, Milovan.

Write performance issues with SSD RAID 10 on P840/4gb fbwc

$

Hi!

I have a new system with 4x512GB Samsung SSD 850 in a RAID10 array using P840/4gb fbwc RAID controller. When i download a file from network (10 Gbit/s) write speed is not that good. I tried downloading a single 1000MB file using wget:

Saving to: ‘1000mb.bin’

1000mb.bin                                       100%[=========================================================================================================>]   1000M   383MB/s   in 2.6s

Write speed 383Mbyte/s

EDIT: When downloading the same file to /dev/null I get full 10Gbit/s speed. The use case is downloading and storing files of that size.

Also when i try to write a file using dd, speed is the same with block size 512byte:

dd if=/dev/zero of=bench.bin bs=512 count=10000K
10240000+0 records in
10240000+0 records out
5242880000 bytes (5.2 GB) copied, 14.6632 s, 358 MB/s

However block size 4k gives better performance:

dd if=/dev/zero of=bench.bin bs=4k count=1000K
1024000+0 records in
1024000+0 records out
4194304000 bytes (4.2 GB) copied, 3.02447 s, 1.4 GB/s

So i tried various different settings concerning cache, SSD smart path, etc. for the raid controller. But i didn't see much difference. Any ideas how to increase write speed?

EVA 6400/8400 Disk Group Allocation Level

$

A little clarification please.  Based upon an earlier support session I had with HP, I was lead to beleive that the Disk Group Allocation Level should not be above a certain percentage based upon the performance level of the disks in the group.  So much so that, when using Near-line 1TB 7200 RPM FATA drives, the allocation level shouldn't go much higher than 50%-60% allocated (DG is single drive protection level, 84 drives).  This seemed a bit excessive, however when we scaled back the allocation levels on our DGs (two other DGs with 15K or 10K drives) to levels less than 80% we did notice a marked improvement in performance.

I realize that fewer presentations means less I/O, but I'm looking for a best practice guide that spells this practice for me.  In doing so, I'm finding many Community postings with people stating that they are at 95% Allocated and that the Allocation Level is considered only when things such as disk failure and leveling are taken into consideration.  I should also point out that the hosts attached are either VMware ESXi, MSSQL clustered servers, or Oracle ASM RAC 11.2 or 12.

My question is this: Given that I don't have the benefit of Performance Advisor to check LUN and host port utilization, etc., how should I go about calculating required Allocation Levels in order to maintain low latencies?  I know that without the tools this will be an in-exact science; however, any guidance is appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Jason

HPE P840 Smart Array battery, is it possible...?

$

I have a P840 Smart Array in a non proliant server, have had it for a while and I love it but I don't have a battery connected directly to the card. It looks like from the cable on the card and the battery assembly that the battery plugs into the proliant motherboard and the card also plugs into the proliant motherboard, instead of the two directly connecting. Is that the case? Or do they make the connection on some kind of daughterboard? I am looking for a way to rig it up to enable battery backed P840 on a non proliant server, any info will be appreciated. I assume it's probably not possible but if there was even a small chance it is worth asking. Any and all info will be appreciated, thanks!

Hi,

I'm trying to Putty into an MSA 1040 but it gives "sh: write error: No space left on device" and puts me back to the logon. I know the logon is correct as if I do it wrong it says "Login incorrect"

I'm attaching from a 2012 VM server using USB passthrough from an ESX host, I have the MSA driver installed on com3 and it works in another site fine. I also tried from 2008 server and get the same error in putty.

Any ideas?
I need to get in to be able to set the IP adress of the iLO up. It's currently displaying an IP of 10.0.0.2 which I can't get to.
